Earthquakes devastated the city of Christchurch in 2011. In 2013, Southern Response and the New Zealand Institute of Architects organised a competition for The Cantabrian Home. The brief was to design a home to represent a new paradigm for housing in the Canterbury region focused on building performance in earthquake events, lightweight construction, and sustainability. Woven Architects’ Cantabrian House was entered into the competition and embodies the principles of the brief. Additionally, the design is also centred around the idea of accessibility, with a focus on low-cost construction. As a typology, Woven Architects’ Cantabrian House is designed to be easily accommodated by the typical Christchurch suburban section. However, special attention is paid to enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor space.
