OHAUPO
RICKARDS'
COTTAGE
Residential
On a large rural section in Ohaupo, this country cottage has been designed as a secondary dwelling for a retired couple. Simple and rustic, two separate structures, reminiscent of traditional rural buildings, constitute a dwelling and garage/shed, linked by an enclosed, outdoor mudroom. The cottage is composed of small, but hard-working spaces, including a galley kitchen, open-plan living and dining, bathroom, master suite with walk-in-robe, storage, and guest bedroom. Heightened, raking ceilings in the living/dining area give additional volume to the space, making it feel larger. Leading on from the living area, an outdoor room provides an interstitial buffer between the indoors and the expansive outdoors beyond, and serves as a quant outdoor dining space. The decking beyond this envelops the north and eastern sides of the cottage, is sheltered by a continuous verandah, and provides panoramic views of the rolling countryside.
